Pieces of a Real Heart - Sanctus Real

Sanctus Real has been around quite a while. Teaming up with Sparrow Records for their debut in 2002, their music was an instant success and the last eight years is history. Seven number one hits and multiple awards and successful albums have sealed their fate of being remembered as one of the this decades best, and longest lasting bands. But will this fifth effort continue the trend? Read on.

"Pieces of a Real Heart" is the follow up to their fourth record "We Need Each Other," which is arguably their best disc to date, and to make it simple, they have a lot to live up to. Beginning in last September when the official title was announced, this has been one of the most anticipated releases of 2010, just to add to that pressure. And even more, late last year the buzz was all about them supposedly changing up their unique and trademark sound, much to the alarm of many devoted listeners. So I guess I'm here to tell you they did...kinda.

Starting off with their new smash hit, the honest lyrics featured on the lead single "Forgiven" are a prime example of this band's talented songwriting abilities, and it will soon be a fan favorite in the future for sure. That song will stand as a sign that might throw some long-time fans off at the kick-off due to it's traditional radio pop sound and lack of overall drive, but to newcomers this track will be a welcome sound. The follow-up is similarly mellow, but this time Matt Hammit's hook-laden writing style kicks in heavily with a catchy sound and plenty of fun upbeat textures that defines it as one of the album's highlights. Getting even better as we go, come "Lead Me," moving into a mid-tempo direction while picking up some more intimate lyrics, the song evolves from perspective to perspective with ease, focusing on the importance of being an example of Christ in you're own family, especially as a parent.

Later on they get down to business, branching into more of their usual raw guitar driven style with tunes such as "Take Over Me" and "I Want to Get Lost," but they move back into the pop/rock mood "I'll Show You How to Live" and the final piece "Keep My Heart Alive," which is yet another great tune worth mentioning. So though this album takes on a softer sound than at times before in their career, there should be plenty of their signature feel to keep fans happy, and they will surely reach a whole new crowd on this return. Heartfelt words mixed with lots of happy and upbeat production keeps things interesting and fun through the 40-minute playing time, and will no doubt the keep this CD in the player for much longer than that. But if "Pieces of a Real Heart" is an improvement upon their earlier work, that's truly up to your personal taste and previous listening to their music. But if you're like me, than enjoy! ~ Christian Lingner
