Sparrow Records' latest new artist venture, Danyew released his debut 6-song EP in April, but to relatively negative reviews. Sounding somewhat like a less pleading Phil Wickham, he has a popular sound, but most of the lyrics come across shallow and unexpressive. Even the best tracks on the album aren't amazing, "Streetlight" is a catchy idea and radio friendly, but somehow doesn't seem to go far enough. By the time we're finished with the third song "Close Your Eyes", things are getting repetetive and the production uninteresting. "Beautiful King" is another worship ballad, and would be pretty good if it didn't sound so much like Leeland's similarly titled, "Beautiful Lord." To finish things up we have "Nothing Without You," which lightens things in upbeat 4/4 time, and the mid-tempo "Turnstile," being a love song between God and man is again not a new idea, but this time pulled off better. And so, even if Danyew isn't as good as Sparrows other new artists like Josh Wilson and Sarah Reeves, he could have potential in the future if he matures his songwriting, and in the long run rework his all ready over played style. ~ Christian Lingner
